What is the Preply app and is it worth installing?
The Preply mobile app is a fully functional companion to the web platform. It runs the same classroom, the same vocabulary trainer, the same calendar — and it adds two things you can't get on a laptop: push notifications for upcoming lessons, and a microphone-recording flow that's faster than fumbling with a browser. If you take more than two lessons per month, install it. If you only learn occasionally, the website is enough.
The app is free, weighs about 90 MB on iOS and 65 MB on Android, and supports phones and tablets. It does not require a separate account — you log in with the same credentials as on the web.
How to install the Preply app — step by step
iOS (iPhone / iPad)
- Open the App Store and search for Preply.
- Confirm the developer is Preply Inc. (there are knockoffs).
- Tap Get, authenticate with Face ID / Touch ID / Apple ID.
- Open the app and either Log in with your existing account, or sign up.
- Allow notifications when prompted — these are how the app reminds you 15 minutes before a lesson.
Android
- Open Google Play and search Preply.
- Confirm the developer is Preply Inc.
- Tap Install. The app downloads in under 30 seconds on most connections.
- Log in. Allow notification + microphone + camera permissions when asked.
Both stores host the official app worldwide. You don't need a Preply-region account or a specific country store.
The features that matter on mobile
- Lesson reminders — push notifications 24h, 1h, and 10 minutes before a lesson. You can customize timings in
Settings → Notifications. - Vocabulary trainer — flashcards your tutor adds appear here automatically. Best feature of the app. 5 minutes per commute = 30+ words reviewed.
- Chat with your tutor — works in the background; the app shows a badge for unread messages.
- Classroom from the phone — full-featured: video, audio, chat, file upload, whiteboard. You'll want a headset.
- Lesson history & notes — your tutor's notes after each lesson are visible offline once cached.
What's different from the website
The app is leaner. A handful of advanced features remain web-only:
- Bulk lesson scheduling and recurring slots are easier on the desktop site.
- Bigger file uploads (PDFs > 25 MB) sometimes fail on mobile data — use Wi-Fi.
- The Preply Business admin dashboard is desktop-only.
- The full pricing page is more readable on a laptop — see our pricing breakdown.
Power-user tips
- Background app refresh on — keeps your calendar fresh without manually pulling to refresh.
- Use airplane mode + Wi-Fi-only if you're on bad data; lessons drop less often on a stable Wi-Fi.
- External keyboard if you write a lot in chat — a USB-C/Lightning keyboard makes the app feel like a laptop.
- Download vocabulary lists ahead of a flight — they're cached locally.
- Mute notifications on weekends if you find the daily streak reminders pushy.

Troubleshooting common app issues
- Crashes on launch — usually fixed by a fresh install (delete + reinstall). Your data lives on Preply's servers; nothing is lost.
- "Lesson can't be started" — kill the app, reopen, then re-tap Join lesson. If still failing, switch to the web app on a laptop.
- Audio echo in the classroom — wear a headset. Built-in laptop or phone speakers cause feedback in calls.
- Notifications not arriving — check OS-level permissions in iOS or Android settings, not just inside the app.
- The vocab trainer isn't syncing — pull-to-refresh in the trainer view; if it still won't update, log out and back in.
FAQ
Is the Preply app free?
Yes — the app is free; you pay only for lessons.
Can I take a lesson entirely from my phone?
Yes — many users do. We still recommend a headset and a stable Wi-Fi connection.
Does the app work offline?
Cached vocabulary lists and lesson notes are accessible offline. Live lessons obviously require an internet connection.
Is there a Mac or Windows desktop app?
No — Preply uses a browser-based web app for desktop. Add it as a PWA in Chrome or Edge if you want an app-like icon.
Can I screen-record my Preply lesson on iOS / Android?
Technically possible, but you must ask your tutor for consent — many will refuse and Preply's ToS treats unauthorized recording as a violation.
