Most new students open Preply, scroll past 50 tutors, get overwhelmed, and book whoever has the friendliest photo. Then they wonder why their trial felt awkward. Here is the boring, methodical way that actually works.
Step 1 — Define your one goal first
Before you touch a filter, write a single sentence: "I want to be able to lead a 30-minute work meeting in English by July." That sentence is your filter. Step 4 — Save 3 finalists and message them
Send the same one-line message to all three: "Hi! I'm at level [B1]. My goal is [unblock my speaking for work calls in 3 months]. Can you help me, and what would the first lesson look like?" The way they answer — speed, warmth, structure — is a 90% accurate preview of how they'll teach.
